Leadership Adventure Camp

The Leadership Academy

(For Project Discovery Counselor’s In Training, The CIT Program)

Our Leadership Adventure Camp is designed to help young people, ages thirteen to seventeen, explore and develop their outdoor leadership potential. The Leadership Adventure Camp is a 5 day and 4 night camp, centered primarily on outdoor leadership, risk management and decision-making in high adventure settings. Enrollment for this camp is limited to 11 campers. We hope to offer most of our graduates the opportunity to become Counselors-In-Training for our summer camp and other Project Discovery programs.

Campers won’t just be enjoying the adventure sports elements as participants. Instead we’ll be spending time learning leadership tools that will allow them to help their peers and younger campers to succeed. We’ll be working on leadership and communication skills, coaching, group facilitation, environmental education and best practices for safety in an outdoor adventure setting. During the afternoons and evenings, we will also be taking some time to become more self-sufficient and responsible as both campers and aspiring young leaders. We’ll be ending the week with a practicum at the Project Discovery Leadership Ropes Course, with each camper demonstrating their leadership skills and savvy shepherding a group through the ropes challenge course.

We hope our Leadership Adventure campers will want to return throughout our season as CIT’s for our camps and other Project Discovery programs and ultimately, perhaps join the Project Discovery Team. Beyond that, the leadership skills your young person develops over the course of this special week will be useful in school, home, community and any other Adventures they embark upon.

All Project Discovery Camps not only provide campers a great adventure in the Northern Sierras but also focus on helping students find and celebrate their own leadership strengths, both as individuals and as team members. All camp weeks end with an appreciation circle celebrating each camper’s accomplishments and growth during the week. Program goals include improving leadership skills, responsibility, self-confidence, communication skills and of course, the making of new friendships. Our overarching goal is to help children discover their strengths, work on their weaknesses and make new friends under the blue skies of a Sierra summer.
