It’s a new week and a new round of summer camp at Project Discovery! Our Rocks, Ropes and Boats Camp is a 5 day summer day camp for youth aged 7 – 13. The camp challenges kids to get out of their comfort zone, face their fears, while developing new friendships that give the support needed to face new challenges.
Monday
This week’s group is slightly older than last week’s group, and all of the kids are from Reno. It’s big enough that we had to expand our shuttle offerings to cover everyone that wanted to be there. We also have a pretty big contingent of returning campers, some of which are going on their 5th season with Project Discovery summer camps. Our first day at the ropes course gave us a chance to develop some focus and trust that will allow each camper to be high achievers during the remainder of the week.
Here’s the “cream of the crop” for photos from Mark 1.0 and Mark 2.0’s cameras. We hope to add more from Phoebe and Naia soon!
Tuesday
Well, our second day at the Project Discovery ropes course was just amazing today. Our campers moved through elements with grace, élan and speed. When all was said and done, nearly every camper had the chance to tackle 5 high elements today, and a number of low elements and ground challenges. We have a lot of pictures to share from the day.
Wednesday
The campers went big at Trippy Rock again this week. The smoke from the Mariposa fire was thick in the air at times, but the weather remained comfortably cool. This week we set up 5 different climbs for kids to find their ideal challenges. We saw some big breakthroughs again, with some of our least experienced climbers completing some of the most difficult climbs. We again ended the day with an opportunity for a 75 foot rappel off of the face of Trippy Rock. These photos are from the two Marks. We hope to add Mike’s shortly (he was a rule breaker and posted them separately here).
Thursday
It was another day where we got to enjoy some cooler weather in trade for smoke filled skies. Fortunately, our hiking location near Mount Rose Knob and Incline Lake was above most of that smoke. This week’s hike was a bit more relaxed, at only 5.5 miles total with about 900 feet of elevation gain. We found plenty of snow for sliding and playing and spent some time repelling in the wild on some granite faces overlooking Tahoe Meadows. Our keen eyed campers even spotted a pair of beavers swimming in Incline Lake during our appreciation circle. Here’s the “best of” photo selection for the day. We’ll add more as I get them,
Friday
We wrapped up Week Two of Rocks, Ropes and Boats with another beautiful day at the beach in Tahoe Vista. The day included some arts and crafts, games and the big boat building challenge. Some great lessons were learned by all, and both teams were rewarded with some ice cream from Mourelatos. We finished out the day with our last round of appreciations. We’re sorry to see this group go. Some of our 5 year veterans were a part of the camp, as well as some very awesome new campers. We hope to see them back next season. We’ll be adding some of Mike’s photos later this weekend.
