Rocks, Ropes & Boats Session Two Recap – 2018

Day One

And we are at it again! Session Two of our Rocks, Ropes and Boats day camp is underway. The heat is on again, and thunderstorms are in the forecast again. Due to a couple of last minute cancellations, our camp group this week is quite a bit smaller than our last session. The first day of camp can always be challenging as kids struggle to build a cohesive team that might span a variety of ages. Most of today was spent in the low course, where the magic of building a team really happens. We finished out the day with a joyous romp on the Flying Squirrel. Here’s our “best of” photo selection for the day:

Day Two

Yup, it was a hot one today, but the kids did power through with very little complaining. We managed to keep them in the shade for about 90% of the day. We did a few quick warmup games, did battle with an evil robot at the Mohawk Walk and then moved right into the high course. Everyone did great, making some of our highest climbs, catching a ride on the zip line and our giant swing. There’s still some lessons to learn about working as a team and community, and we’ll keep working at it!

Day Three

It was pretty hot out at Trippy Rock today, but certainly better than being at a lower elevation. With three ropes and only a dozen climbers, most of the kids got in as many climbs as they wanted. We also took a midday break for some watermelon, and finished the day with a cooling water play session. Tomorrow…well that will be hot too! Bring plenty of water for tomorrow’s hike.

Day Four

It’s just not right. As our hike ended today, the thermometer registered 88° in the Mount Rose summit parking lot. This is far better than the 104° in Reno, but not the most comfortable conditions for a 9 mile hike with kids. They were champions though. We added in a lot of stops in the shade, slowed our pace and doubled down on water. Parents, in case you did not know, your kid will do anything for peach rings. Find them in the candy section at Safeway and most grocers. They have probably already asked you to do so. See you at the beach tomorrow.

Day Five

For the second week in a row, the coolest day of the week was the one at the beach. Hazy skies in the morning and breezy winds in the afternoon brought temperatures down more than 10 degrees today for the final day of Rocks, Ropes and Boats summer camp. We enjoyed some ground games, kayak races and a lot of fun challenges with the fun island. Finishing off camp with a trip to Cable Car Ice Cream and our last appreciation circle was the nice “cherry on top.”
